My interest in riding on public transportation; that is, buses, trams, and trains, originated 35 years ago while living and working in Bern, Switzerland. My journey to work each day began with boarding a bus, then a tram, to a commuter train, ending with a 10-minute walk. This routine provided a refreshing change from my car-dependent lifestyle here at home.
Public transportation is a source of fascination for me on two levels. First, I am interested in how commuters relate to each other on the platform, waiting for the bus/tram/train to arrive. This space becomes a stage of constantly changing characters, providing me with countless hours of imagined sub-plots played out in my mind.
Secondly, I am attracted to the idea of movement or motion; the relationship between the commuter and the bus, tram, or train moving through a particular space. I often feel like I am partaking in a strangely beautiful choreographed dance.
During the past few years I have been making photographs of these once familiar places, attempting to make visible some of these feelings.
