Much of the Orkney Mainland is used for agriculture. Gentle rolling treeless hills, fertile soil, and mild climate provide ideal conditions for grazing sheep and cattle. The strip of land in the mid-ground is the island of Gairsay. Nine inter-island ferries operate between Orkney’s mainland and thirteen smaller islands.
